THE STUDDED TIRE ISSUE STILL NOT RESOLVED

It’s been over 5 years since I first attempted to ban studded tires from Oregon’s roads.  The reason I started this was after I asked ODOT’S Matt Garret, “When are we going to ban studded tires?” His response, “Talk to Les Schwab”, yet ODOT sits on it’s hands and does nothing.  The Oregon Legislators have done nothing either but fold under the pressure from Les Schwab.  This is a testament to how broken democracy is and how big business makes the rules to continue their subsidies from taxpayers.  It’s not just the Legislators but the media is to blame too, for only telling part of the story.  OPB did a story on studded tires but failed to identify the real reasons nothing has been done for decades-Les Schwab.  I commented on the article and the comment was swiftly removed, OPB stands for “public” broadcasting, right?  I commented on an article last month on KVTZ TV’S studded tire article, they said some people feel “guilty” about using studded tires because of the damage.  When I commented on the article it was swiftly removed.  Bend Oregon is the home of corrupt Les Schwab, I guess you don’t bite the hand that feeds.  Where’s “freedom of speech?” in all of this and public’s right to access  all the information available?  I know more about the studded tire issue than most of the legislators.
I attended several of Portland’s mayor road maintenance town halls.  I mentioned studded tires and “why fix the roads only to have them chewed up again?”  They acted like that wasn’t a problem, apparently they don’t look at the roads while their driving. It’s obvious that banning studded tires could save road users millions of dollars.
There’s a new mayoral candidate, Ted Wheeler, who claims as far back as March of 2010 that:

“I agree with those who say that metal studded tires do substantial damage to the roads. I’d love to see an estimate from ODOT. I believe that this is best addressed at the state level rather than with a patchwork of local ordinances that vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. We have family in Central Oregon so we go there a lot in all conditions without trouble. We don’t use metal studs – they are no longer necessary as there are lots of good alternatives now that don’t gouge the roads so badly.”

Hopefully Ted has the courage and clout to push the legislators to due their jobs, protecting taxpayers money and interest.

I spent $300 of my own money to have this site hosted.  I put lots of valuable information here and wanted the public to know the truth behind studded tires and why their still legal and with no fee for their use.  I still receive all the news about the studded tire issue and will be posting information as it becomes available.

Alaska study confirms studless tires more effective in all weather conditions

Studded tire use continues to be a controversial topic. Many states have banned studded tires and still others have restricted the kind of studs that can be used. Advocates of studded tires argue they improve winter driving through increased vehicle traction. Opponents say they accelerate pavement wear such as rutting, costing taxpayers millions, and believe any traction benefits over newer tire technologies are largely perceived.

Welcome

My name is Jeff Bernards, I am the one who is proposing the State Initiative to “Ban Studded Tires” in Oregon.

After years of frustration contacting our political leaders about the burden studded tires are causing taxpayers, it became obvious no action was going to be taken on their part. I’ve been left no choice but to proceed with a state initiative to “Ban Studded Tires” in the Oregon. This is a huge undertaking; there are no political motives or hidden agendas. Our goal is to make our roads safe year round, protect the huge investments we’ve made in our roads and free up “wasted” money fixing the damage caused by studded tires.

This site will be used to help organize anyone interested in volunteering, donating money, providing leadership & experience to see the State Initiative to make the ballot in 2012.

What we need right now:

1.Locate an office space that can be used for 2 years.
2. A Treasurer, accounting experience necessary.
3. 2 people willing to put their names on the “Prospective Petition for State Measure.” Takes 3, I’m one of them.
4. HELP!

Long Term Needs:
1. Fund raising
2. Signature gathering (we will be using paid petitioners)

Please help stop special interest from running Salem. Let’s make government work for us, not the other way around.

Thanks So Much,
Jeff Bernards
