The Oregonian reported that the studded tire season had been extended until April 4, 2011. I contacted the state last year and asked how many tickets were written regarding having studs on past the removal date, they had no record of any tickets being written. So there’s basically no fine for tearing up our roads out of season. Offer your comment and take the poll here.

I have tried for 10 years to get any elected official to read the published tests which show that there is no advantage to studded tires and act on that information. None would. One state legislator told me it would result in his political death to advocate for their removal. Last year the Governor indicated even he would not push for removal. Most everybody that I have spoken with are ignorant of the independent test results. I am very glad you are trying to get this on the ballot where perhaps it will stand a chance.

It is ridiculous that a few people who use studded tires, and probably do not even drive on the day there is ice, can destroy our roads and cause so much damage that all of us pay for. We need the ban on this studded menace. But of course big money from les schwab will probably generate T.V. commercials with a major spin so the less intelligent people who vote will probably go along with a NO for the ban.

I’m all for people using studded tires – as long as they only use them on days when there’s actually a full covering of snow or ice on the road. Otherwise, keep them inside. Or better yet, how about just buy snow tires. That’s what I have on my 4×4. No studs needed.
